Bike Security Matters: Protect Your Motorcycle Before It Is Too Late
Bike Security Matters: Protect Your Motorcycle Before It Is Too Late
Bit of a serious one today, but it is something every rider should think about.
Lately, we have had a fair few calls into the shop from people whose bikes have been stolen, asking us to keep an eye out in case they turn up. Honestly, it is gutting every time.
No one ever thinks it will be their bike until it is.
With the nicer weather here, more motorcycles, scooters and mopeds are out on the roads. Sadly, that also means bike theft can become more common. Some bikes are stolen to be sold on, but others are taken for no real reason at all. We have heard of bikes being dumped, damaged, left in alleyways, pushed into water, taken from driveways, stolen while people are shopping, and even taken from the back of camper vans.
It is not just the cost of the bike. It is the stress, the hassle, the insurance calls, the police reports, the lost transport, and the feeling that something you worked hard for has been taken by someone who simply did not care.

It Only Takes Seconds
A quick stop at the shop, parking outside your house, leaving it on the driveway, or thinking “I will only be five minutes” can be enough time for the wrong person to take an interest.
Motorcycle theft is often quick and opportunistic. If a bike looks easy to move, easy to lift, or easy to wheel away, it becomes a much easier target.
Good security does not make a bike impossible to steal, but it can make a massive difference. The aim is to slow thieves down, put them off, and make your bike look like too much hassle compared with an easier target.

Do Not Rely On The Steering Lock Alone
A steering lock is better than nothing, but on its own it is not enough. If you have spent thousands on your bike, it is worth protecting it properly.
Think of bike security in layers. The more layers you use, the harder your bike is to take.

Useful security options include:
- Disc locks
- Heavy duty chains
- Ground anchors
- Alarmed locks
- Bike covers
- Secure parking where possible
Even simple bits of kit can make a big difference, especially when used together.
Think About Where You Park
Where you leave your bike matters just as much as what you lock it with.
Try to park somewhere visible, well lit, and ideally near something solid you can lock the bike to. At home, a ground anchor and chain can be a very strong setup. If your bike is kept outside, a cover can also help keep it less obvious to anyone passing by.
If your bike is on a driveway, outside your house, at work, at the shops, or on the back of a camper van, it is still worth securing properly. Theft does not only happen overnight.
Security Can Matter For Insurance Too
It is also worth checking your insurance policy. Some insurers may ask what security you use, where the bike is kept, and whether it was secured at the time of theft.
If a policy says your bike should be locked, garaged, chained, alarmed, or fitted with certain security, you need to make sure you follow those terms. Otherwise, you could end up with problems if you ever need to make a claim.
Every policy is different, so it is always worth reading the small print and making sure your bike security matches what your insurer expects.

Protect What You Have Worked For
Whether you ride a motorcycle, scooter, moped, learner bike, commuter, classic, weekend toy, or pride and joy, it deserves protecting.
Most riders put a lot of money, time and care into their bikes. For someone to take it just for a laugh, out of jealousy, to sell on, or to dump somewhere is awful. Sadly, it does happen, and the best thing you can do is make your bike as unattractive to thieves as possible.
A good lock, chain, alarm or anchor might feel like an extra cost, but compared with losing the bike, it is money well spent.
